Shaping the Future of MPD Learning: Bringing MPD SmartCards to the iPhone Duo with Expo SDK 58
The mobile ecosystem is about to experience one of the biggest design milestones of the last decade. With the imminent launch of the iPhone Duo, Apple is officially entering the foldable device market. While many users are wondering how this will impact the performance of older generations, at Drillsoft LLC, our attention is entirely focused on the future.
Our mission has always been to equip MPD (Managed Pressure Drilling) engineers with the best technological tools for their training and fieldwork. That is why we are incredibly proud to announce that our app, MPD SmartCards, is ready to fully leverage the dual-screen capabilities of the new iPhone Duo.
The Catalyst: An Official Invitation from Apple
Our rapid adaptation accelerated when we received an official communication from Apple Developers inviting us to “Say hello to iPhone Duo.” Along with early access to the Xcode 27.1 beta, Apple provided us with the official Figma and Sketch design kits from the Apple Design Resources, allowing us to start building customized experiences for all screen sizes immediately.

The Technical Challenge: Why are we ready from Day One?
Unlike other solutions on the market, our cross-platform development infrastructure is powered by React Native and Expo. Recently, the Expo team announced that the SDK 58 beta is built specifically for iOS 27. This iOS version requires a UIKit scene-based life cycle and automatically makes iPhone apps resizable.
As Nishan Bende summarized in his recent X/Twitter update: “Just merged toolbar/navigationstackview API in Expo UI which auto-adapts for duo… Anything that works in SwiftUI, is available in Expo UI.” In short: the combination of React Native and Expo is more than ready to support foldables, and so are we at Drillsoft. The Expo team will be releasing continuous improvements during the beta to ensure deep integration with the iPhone Duo from day one.
Dynamic Design: An Interface That Flows With You
To achieve this technical feat, we strictly adhered to Apple’s design guidelines for dynamic layouts and split views. The core principle is simple: an app designed for the iPhone Duo must adapt seamlessly to both displays, providing a continuous experience as the device opens and closes.

What does this mean for you, the MPD engineer?
• Folded Mode: When you use the phone closed, whether in portrait or landscape, the application offers a compact yet powerful view. The floating side navigation bar allows you to smoothly move between Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert lessons without losing reading space.
• Unfolded Mode: Upon opening your device, the application detects the device poses and expands the information. In the landscape view, the extended canvas allows you to interact with detailed study cards or run full-screen simulations. In portrait view, the navigation bar dynamically positions itself at the bottom or side for a perfect ergonomic reach for your thumbs.
Uninterrupted Immersive Training
Beyond the visual layout of the menus, we have optimized modal interactions. Dialog boxes and content sheets dynamically adapt to the screen’s partitions.

This means that if you are taking an exam or reviewing the glossary, and you decide to open or close the phone for comfort, the interface will flow with you without resetting your progress. This fluid experience is further enhanced by the React Native 0.88 Release Candidate included in this beta, ensuring unmatched performance.
